My preferred type of yoga is Ashtanga. I love how it makes me feel, how it makes me sweat, and how it pushes me to the limit of my body. It’s a remarkable cleansing and relaxing experience even as it pushes my body to a high intensity workout. I found the DVD preview of one of the DVDs I use to practice Ashtanga with (as I don’t have the opportunity to work with an instructor personally, and it’s just easier for me to have a DVD going while I practice ashtanga yoga). I do this routine about three days a week, although I do mix up my other days’ exercises with various forms of Hatha and Bikram yoga.

Yoga believes it is the spinal column that holds the secret path to knowledge and liberation. This is supposed to contain three nadis or channels called Ida, Pingala and Sushumna.

Basic Yoga Mats by Gaiam

There are all sorts of yoga mats out there - ranging from cheap exercise mats to wildly expensive luxury Yoga mats. When you are first starting out in your Yoga adventure, the last thing you want to do is become hampered down by trying to choose the best basic Yoga mat for beginners. Gaiam has a great basic yoga mat from their Yoga Essentials series. These basic yoga mats come in many different colors, meant to mirror the colors of the Chakras and then some.

It has just the right amount of cushion to provide proper support for most types of yoga (although if you’re an Ashtanga junky you’re going to want to shell out the cash for something thicker). These yoga mats are 24″W x 68″ L x 1/8″D. There is no latex contained in the materials, for those of you with allergies. The Yoga Essentials basic yoga mat from Gaiam will run you $22.00, which is a decent price for your first yoga mat. Plus it’ll last you for a long time.
